Soon after the burial thieves had raided the ante-chamber.

They only took small, valuable, easily-carried items. Other larger items had been thrown around in heaps when Carter first saw them. There were more than 2,000 separate objects in the four rooms of the tomb. Carter began work on the coffins of Tutankhamun in October. There was a wooden outer coffin, a second coffin covered in gold and a third coffin made of solid gold.
